Microsoft, Amazon and Google emissions rose nearly a fifth while Google reported AI systems cut 41 million tonnes elsewhere
The three companies emitted 119 million metric tonnes of CO2 equivalent in the financial year ending March 2026, up from 101 million the prior year. The Guardian reported the increase was driven largely by datacentre construction.

Microsoft, Amazon and Google collectively emitted 119 million metric tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent in the financial year ending March 2026. The total marked an increase of nearly a fifth from the 101 million tonnes recorded the previous year. The Guardian reported that the rise stemmed largely from datacentre construction.
Microsoft’s emissions rose 25 percent to 20 million tonnes, driven primarily by expansion of its datacentre infrastructure. Google recorded an 18 percent increase, attributed to supply chain activities supporting rapid business expansion. Amazon reported a 16 percent overall increase, including a 20 percent rise in supply chain emissions.
All three companies restated their net zero targets. Google and Microsoft aim to reach the goal by 2030, while Amazon targets 2040. Google stated its AI systems helped reduce emissions elsewhere by 41 million tonnes last year.
Amazon said it is making progress toward its 2040 target. The companies released their annual sustainability reports documenting the increases over the past weeks.
