indianexpress.comMicrosoft has canceled most of its direct Claude Code licenses and moved engineers toward GitHub Copilot CLI, according to The Verge. The change occurred six months after the company first opened access to Claude Code for thousands of developers, project managers, designers, and other employees.
The scale of employee usage prompted the reversal. Canceling the licenses will not affect Microsoft’s Foundry deal, which includes up to $5 billion in investment in Anthropic and Anthropic’s $30 billion commitment to purchase Azure compute capacity.

The firm had previously ranked teams by AI tool usage on internal leaderboards. Meta employees created a leaderboard called “Claudeonomics” to track AI model usage. Amazon has encouraged staff to maximize token consumption.
Sachs projected that agentic AI could increase token consumption 24-fold by 2030, reaching 120 quadrillion tokens per month. A Gartner report stated that inference costs for a one-trillion-parameter model will fall nearly 90 percent by 2030 compared with 2025 levels.
Gartner senior director analyst Will Sommer said chief product officers should not equate lower token prices with lower overall enterprise AI costs. Nvidia vice president Bryan Catanzaro stated that compute costs for his team already exceed employee costs.
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has said he expects 100 AI agents to work alongside each employee at the company in the future.
