Migrant Boat Launched from Beach South of Dieppe
French and British authorities tracked a small boat that left a beach south of Dieppe around 8 a.m. The launch site lies roughly 100 miles south of the usual departure points near Dunkirk and Calais.
GB NewsM. A lifeboat from Dieppe was sent to escort the vessel as it moved into the English Channel. The launch site is approximately 100 miles south of the beaches near Dunkirk and Calais that have been used more frequently. GB News reported that this is the furthest south a departure has been recorded since the Channel crossings began eight years ago.
A senior maritime security source told GB News that French police have increased patrols around Dunkirk and Calais after the British government agreed to a new £662 million deal for enhanced coastal security. Hundreds of additional officers have been assigned to the area.
GB News reported that the increased presence has prompted some departures from beaches in Belgium and further south along the French coast. A French warship later took over escort duties from the lifeboat.
News reported a second dinghy launched Tuesday from Equihen Plage south of Boulogne and is being escorted by the French border patrol vessel Abeille Normandie. The source said the boat launched south of Dieppe will likely require close to eight hours to reach UK waters.
Three boats carrying at least 150 people crossed on Monday. On Friday, 394 migrants reached the UK; on Saturday, 287 arrived; and on Sunday, 231 arrived. If the Tuesday launches succeed, the total since Friday will exceed 1,200.
