Mike McGuire Campaigns in Rural Northern California Ahead of Congressional Races

California state Senator Mike McGuire has held nearly 40 town halls in the newly drawn first congressional district over the last five months. The district includes rural Plumas County, which has voted Republican in recent elections. McGuire faces Republican and progressive Democratic opponents in both a special election this summer and the November midterm contest.

Quincy, a town of 1,600 residents in Plumas County, lies in a rural part of far northern California that has elected Republicans to Congress for nearly 50 years. McGuire told the audience that residents across party lines share common goals. "No matter if you’re a Democrat or Republican, you want to send your kid to a good public school.

You want to be able to keep your hospital open and to keep healthcare thriving in the community that you love. " he said to applause. The lawmaker, who is from Healdsburg, has visited the area three times in recent months. He spoke about creating jobs in rural areas, supporting Medicare for all, and the need for stronger Democratic leadership in Washington.

McGuire, 46, began his political career on a local school board at age 19.

District Creates New Competition California’s Proposition

50 redrew congressional maps in a way that placed Quincy in the new first congressional district. The change has made the seat more competitive. McGuire is running against a Republican state lawmaker and a progressive Democrat in both races. He faces steeper odds in the special election under the old boundaries, where he does not live.

Political observers have described the new district lines as favorable to him for the November race.

Over the past five months McGuire has held nearly 40 town hall meetings from Santa Rosa to the town of Sierraville. The approach mirrors that of LaMalfa, who frequently attended local events as a rice farmer representing the sprawling district. At campaign stops McGuire has highlighted his family background, noting that his mother and grandmother were a prune rancher and grape grower who raised him with limited financial means.

He has emphasized lowering insurance costs related to wildfires, an issue that affects much of the first congressional district after some of the state’s most destructive fires. McGuire has criticized both major parties. The statements have drawn applause from those attending his events in the Republican-leaning region.

The races will test whether a Democrat with experience in high state office can gain support in an area where some residents have felt overlooked by leaders in Sacramento and Washington.
