Kuwait's army said its air defenses intercepted hostile missile and drone attacks on Wednesday. Bahrain sounded warning sirens and directed residents to the nearest safe space. The United States said it fired on a tanker headed toward Iran. Iran's news agency reported explosions near Qeshm Island close to the Strait of Hormuz.

The incidents mark the latest flare-up more than three months after U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran.

States announced last week they had reached a tentative initial agreement to end the war. The two sides have not signed the deal. Iranian media reported no communication between Tehran and Washington for several days. U.S. President Donald Trump stated negotiations have continued.

"The conversations between us have been going on continuously, including four days ago, three days ago, two days ago, one day ago, and today," he said in a social media post. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio told lawmakers Tuesday that sanctions relief would require Iran to give up its nuclear activity.

Iran has kept the Strait of Hormuz largely closed to traffic that previously carried about a fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas supplies. Israeli forces struck towns in southern Lebanon on Tuesday despite a U.S.-mediated partial ceasefire announced Monday.

The world's largest shipping group MSC said one of its vessels was hit by two projectiles at Iraq's Umm Qasr port on Monday. Iran's Revolutionary Guards said they carried out the attack in retaliation for a U.S. strike on an Iranian vessel in the Gulf of Oman.

UNICEF reported that higher transport costs and supply disruptions are delaying aid deliveries to Gaza, Lebanon, Democratic Republic of Congo, Mali, Somalia, South Sudan, Nigeria and other locations.
