Mitchell Signs Four-Year, $273 Million Extension With Cavaliers

Cleveland Cavaliers guard Donovan Mitchell agreed to a four-year, $273 million maximum contract extension that includes a player option for the 2030-31 season and a full trade kicker. The agreement was reached on the first day Mitchell became eligible for a new deal.

Mitchell could have waited until next summer for a five-year, $353 million contract but chose to commit immediately. He was entering the final guaranteed season of his existing deal, which carried a 2027 player option.

The new extension replaces that structure and locks in his salary through at least the 2029-30 season. Mitchell, 29, has repeatedly expressed commitment to the franchise since arriving from the Utah Jazz in 2022. Officials spoke with Mitchell and his representative once the extension window opened and finalized terms quickly.

Mitchell has averaged 26.7 points, 5.3 assists and 4.6 rebounds per game during his time with the Cavaliers. The team has reached the playoffs in each of those seasons after missing the postseason in the prior four years. Last season he helped lead Cleveland to the Eastern Conference finals for the first time in his nine-year career.

On the night the team was eliminated by the New York Knicks, Mitchell told reporters the group had "unfinished business" and would return focused.

Mitchell has said he would welcome a reunion with LeBron James if James decides to sign with Cleveland.
