STAT published an interview with Moderna co-founder Kenneth Chien on June 29, 2026, in which he discusses the future of mRNA technology and Moderna. Chien has maintained a 50-year career in science. Chien received an Hermes belt as a gift from Moderna CEO Stéphane Bancel in 2013.
The gift followed Chien's role in securing a partnership between the then-tiny mRNA startup and the Swedish-British pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca. The 2013 Moderna-AstraZeneca partnership aimed to develop up to 40 mRNA-based drugs for cancer and cardiovascular disease. Stat reported that the deal accelerated Moderna's ascent and helped bring billions in funding.
