Mohamed Salah Scores Twice as Egypt Beats New Zealand 3-1

Mohamed Salah scored in the 67th minute and later delivered a corner that produced a second goal as Egypt defeated New Zealand 3-1 in a FIFA World Cup 2026 group match. Egypt had trailed after New Zealand scored early. Salah equalized the match with his strike before Trezeguet headed in the corner to secure the result.
The victory marks Egypt's first World Cup win after eight previous attempts. A point against Iran in the final group game would advance Egypt to the last 32. Salah had been quiet in Egypt's opening draw with Belgium. Against New Zealand he recorded five shots and created five more for teammates.
The goal was Salah's 68th in 118 appearances for Egypt. He is one goal short of manager Hossam Hassan's national-team scoring record. Salah said after the match: "It's a great achievement for all the players. It's a great win. It's a great vibe. Salah missed a key chance in that tournament and Egypt failed to qualify for the 2022 edition.
The player has yet to win a senior trophy with Egypt despite three Africa Cup of Nations final appearances by the previous generation between 2006 and 2010. Former Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou told ITV that Salah's performance would give Egypt "enormous belief" after overcoming early adversity.
