Heavy monsoon rains triggered landslides that killed at least eight Rohingya refugees, including five children, at camps in southeastern Bangladesh. A landslide swept through an Islamic school at a camp in Cox’s Bazar district, killing the five children while they attended classes.
A fire official said rescue teams pulled five more children from the debris and suspected additional victims remained buried.
Rescue operations continued into Wednesday evening.
Three days earlier, separate landslides at Rohingya camps in the same area killed at least eight people. Officials have relocated more than 1,000 refugees from at-risk hilly areas and warned others to move, though many residents have been reluctant to leave their shelters.
The weather office in Dhaka forecast continued rain in coming days. Bangladesh has long urged the international community to support repatriation of the refugees to Myanmar, but the process remains stalled. More than 1 million Rohingya refugees live in the camps.
