Montreal Canadiens Reach Eastern Conference Finals in 2026 Playoffs

The Montreal Canadiens reached the Eastern Conference finals after winning Game 7 contests on the road against Tampa and Buffalo. The team entered Monday night's home game against Carolina tied 1-1 in the best-of-seven series. City streets showed visible support with Habs flags on vehicles and "Go Habs Go" messages on bus signs.

Residents gathered in public spaces such as Girouard Park to watch Game 2 on a large screen. Approximately 600 people attended the outdoor viewing in the Notre-Dame-de-Grace neighborhood. Brendan Kelly, author of "Habs Nation: A People's History of the Montreal Canadiens," said an entire generation is experiencing heightened excitement for a Canadiens playoff run.

Montreal has not won the Stanley Cup since 1993, a span of 33 years that includes 13 missed playoff appearances. Fans born after 1988 have no personal memory of a championship. Nicholas Bergeron, 35, described the team's history as extending beyond sports into cultural identity.

Lukas Drouin, born in 1988, recalled watching games with his father and noted the current run feels "magical" to supporters. Melissa Delisle, born in 1999, said interest extends across neighborhoods, restaurants, and households. Sunil Peetush, born in Montreal in 1978, maintains a collection of team memorabilia and discusses team history with his children.

The current roster includes players from nine nationalities, six of whom were born in Quebec. Executive vice president Jeff Gorton and general manager Kent Hughes have communicated openly about team development plans.
