More than 20,000 runners completed the Comrades ultramarathon earlier this month in South Africa. The nearly 55-mile race runs between Durban and Pietermaritzburg and has been held every year since 1921 except during World War II and the COVID-19 pandemic. The event alternates direction annually.
On an up-run year, participants climb 5,905 feet to Pietermaritzburg, which sits 650 meters above sea level. Semafor reported that Cape Town was named the eighth World Marathon Major city and the first in Africa. The designation adds to South African long-distance running achievements alongside the Comrades history of reflecting national desegregation after apartheid.
