Mehdi El Youbi was arrested in Casablanca on Monday night after being questioned by Morocco’s National Brigade of Judicial Police, according to a statement from a group of his friends and supporters. His family was informed at around 9pm that he had been taken into police custody. He is scheduled to appear before the public prosecutor on Wednesday morning.
Al Jazeera reported that the arrest is believed to be linked to his artistic views and posts on social media. El Youbi, born in 1992 and known by his stage name Mehdi Black Wind, has been based in France since 2017 and was barred from returning days before the detention.
” The detention occurred one day after the arrest of journalist Ali Lmrabet and two weeks after Zineb Kharroubi received a six-month suspended sentence for incitement by electronic means.
Supporters expressed concern that El Youbi may appear without a lawyer because lawyers in Morocco are currently on strike.
