uctoday.comA California couple relocating from Oceanside to North Carolina says a moving broker doubled the quoted price and is holding their belongings after a disputed delivery attempt. The couple signed a contract with the broker for just over $16,000 and paid a $7,000 deposit.
On moving day the broker raised the price to $32,000, citing a larger volume of items than originally estimated. The couple agreed to proceed to avoid losing the deposit. Delivery was attempted on June 3, one week earlier than the couple said they would be available.
The broker then sought an extra redelivery fee. The couple says the broker now holds both the $30,000 already paid and their belongings. The couple also alleges the initial delivery attempt may have been staged with a different truck than the one used for loading.
They filed police reports in Oceanside and in North Carolina and submitted complaints to the Better Business Bureau. The broker has received 280 complaints with the BBB over the past three years. The broker disputed the couple's account but said it is working to reach a resolution.
