MP says tax rises need clear purpose

An independent parliamentarian warned against raising taxes without a clear purpose, citing effects on households facing higher living costs. The MP, who was excluded from the party after opposing the end of jury trials, said officials should avoid measures taken solely for their own sake.

"We've got to be careful across the board. Let's not do stuff for the sake of doing stuff... I think it's ludicrous to just clobber people for the sake of clobbering them," the MP stated.

Tax proposals under review A senior politician is considering changes that would align capital gains tax with income tax and lower the threshold for a mansion tax. The independent MP said some capital gains tax adjustments could receive support if the revenue is directed toward specific local investments.

The MP also expressed skepticism toward a prior decision to apply VAT to private school fees, describing it as a measure that affected families without clear justification.

Additional cautions from former officials A former prime minister's institute stated that countries cannot tax their way to prosperity and described some proposed increases as bad politics. The independent MP noted agreement with certain capital gains proposals while stressing the need for caution on any new levies.
