MUFG to Form Strategic Partnership with Google on AI Financial Services
Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group announced a partnership with Google to develop an artificial intelligence service for online shopping, payments and household finance management. The Japanese bank group plans to launch an AI agent that searches for products, suggests payment methods and tracks spending. A pilot program is scheduled to begin by March 2027.
Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group said Thursday that it will form a strategic partnership with Google to strengthen its retail financial services. The two firms will develop a service to assist customers in online shopping and payments with the help of artificial intelligence.
The Japanese bank group aims to launch an AI agent that acts autonomously as part of the alliance. The agent will search for products based on conditions set by users, propose optimal payment methods and manage household finances using spending records.
Mitsubishi UFJ plans to begin a pilot program by next March. "There will be considerable synergy from integrating finance into various tools in daily life," Mitsubishi UFJ Senior Managing Corporate Executive Tadashi Yamamoto told a news conference.
Banks in Japan are increasing efforts to retain individual customers amid growing competition for deposits. Domestic interest rates have been rising, making retail deposits a more important resource for lending. Mitsubishi UFJ is enhancing its services by working with technology companies.
The bank launched comprehensive digital financial services for retail customers under the brand "M-tto" last June. It also announced a partnership with OpenAI in November.
