Multiple states are reporting an increase in cyclosporiasis cases as of July 9, 2026, @ABC reported. Health officials in Michigan have recorded more than 1,200 cases, while Ohio has reported more than 170. Cyclosporiasis is an intestinal infection caused by the microscopic parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis.
It affects the small intestine and produces watery diarrhea that can include explosive bowel movements, along with cramping, bloating, low-grade fever, nausea and vomiting. The parasite spreads through food or water contaminated with feces. Past foodborne outbreaks have been linked to imported fresh produce including raspberries, basil, snow peas, mesclun lettuce and cilantro.
Symptoms typically appear about one week after infection, though the range is two days to two weeks. Diagnosis requires testing stool samples, sometimes multiple samples collected on different days, and healthcare providers must specifically request testing for Cyclospora. Treatment consists of the oral antibiotic trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole taken for 10 days.
Most people with healthy immune systems recover without treatment, but untreated illness can last from a few days to a month or longer. The CDC advises washing produce thoroughly, removing bruised or damaged portions, refrigerating pre-cut items and washing hands with soap and water before handling fruits and vegetables.
