The Battlefield series began with Battlefield 1942, launched for PC and Mac in 2002. Subsequent games expanded to consoles and covered settings from Vietnam to the far future. Last year's Battlefield 6 was reported as one of the most expensive video games created and became the bestselling game of that year and the franchise. A representative for Electronic Arts declined to comment on the bids.

Video game adaptations are increasing in prominence, with The Super Mario Galaxy Movie from Illumination, Nintendo, and Universal earning $764 million worldwide, making it the biggest film of 2026 so far. Other upcoming adaptations include New Line Cinema’s Mortal Kombat II, Sony’s Resident Evil, Paramount’s Street Fighter, and a new Angry Birds movie from Paramount.

Next year, Nintendo and Sony plan to release The Legend of Zelda.

Paramount is preparing a film adaptation of the rival Call of Duty franchise, with Taylor Sheridan set to write and Peter Berg to direct. Christopher McQuarrie recently directed the last two Mission: Impossible films, Dead Reckoning and The Final Reckoning, following work on earlier entries in the series.

McQuarrie developed a relationship with Tom Cruise during Edge of Tomorrow and directed him in Jack Reacher in 2012, before taking on Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation and subsequent installments.
