Clive Davis died at his home in Manhattan at the age of 94. Davis spent five decades in the record business, steering Columbia Records, Arista and J Records to leading positions in the pop market. He urged Columbia Records to expand into rock music and helped develop artists including Janis Joplin, Carlos Santana and Bruce Springsteen.
Davis was dismissed from Columbia Records in 1973 after allegations of misusing company funds. He later pleaded guilty to tax evasion. Davis subsequently joined Arista Records and later established J Records.
