A musical adaptation of William Kamkwamba’s memoir The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind opened on London’s West End in May 2026. The Royal Shakespeare Company produced the show, which recounts how the 13-year-old Kamkwamba constructed a windmill during Malawi’s famine in 2001. Kamkwamba assembled the windmill from scrap metal and old physics textbooks.

At the time, electricity reached only 2 percent of Malawians. The completed structure supplied power to his rural village and enabled his family and neighbors to operate a water pump that irrigated crops. Kamkwamba said the memoir had aimed to share the story with a wider audience.

“Through the book, we were trying to share this story with the rest of the world,” he said, “but people get stories in different forms. ” The production marks the first London stage presentation of the memoir. Semafor reported the opening on June 1, 2026.
