Musicians Honor Record Executive Clive Davis at Manhattan Funeral

A private memorial service for music executive Clive Davis was held Monday at Central Synagogue on Manhattan's Upper East Side. Alicia Keys, who met Davis at age 15, addressed the gathering while reading a letter she had written to him. Keys said she was not usually emotional in public and borrowed a handkerchief during her remarks.

Dionne Warwick, Barry Manilow, Ja Rule, Stevie Wonder, Kenny G, Jennifer Hudson and Bruce Springsteen were among those present. Hudson performed Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" and Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You." Springsteen recalled meeting Davis in 1979 at age 22. He said Davis told him "Welcome to Columbia Records" after an audition and that those words changed his life.

Davis, who died at age 94 last Monday from an age-related illness at his Manhattan home, worked with artists including Whitney Houston, Sean "Diddy" Combs and Kelly Clarkson. He also helped revive the careers of Aretha Franklin and Santana. " Davis is survived by four children, eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
