Musk Says Anthropic Leads AI After U.S. Lifts Export Controls on Mythos and Fable

Elon Musk stated on X that he was clearly wrong about Anthropic and that the company is currently the leader in AI. He added that no company has released a model as good as Mythos/Fable and that Anthropic will undoubtedly have Mythos 2 ready soon. Musk also said he would never cut Anthropic off in a way that hurt them badly, even as a competitor.

In September 2025 Musk had stated he believed winning was never in the set of possible outcomes for Anthropic. Anthropic released Claude Mythos 5 and Claude Fable 5 to the public last month. The company then restricted global access to the models in response to export controls imposed by the Trump administration after the U.S.

Government expressed concern over reports of suspected Chinese hackers accessing Mythos without authorization. The Commerce Department lifted the export restrictions on Mythos and Fable after a thorough review of Anthropic’s proprietary technology. OpenAI released the latest version of ChatGPT to the public on Thursday after undergoing a federal review for national security and cybersecurity risks.

The Trump administration had requested OpenAI to pause the wide release of its newest model last month following an AI-related executive order calling for a federal review of up to 30 days. Musk, in charge of the newly merged SpaceXAI, announced the launch of Grok 4.5 on Wednesday. The release marks SpaceXAI’s first since going public and acquiring AI coding startup Cursor.

SpaceX merged with xAI earlier this year. SpaceXAI officially rebranded itself as SpaceXAI this week. The aerospace company completed its historic initial public offering last month and exceeded $2 trillion in market capitalization.
