Myanmar's foreign minister met with several Southeast Asian counterparts in Bangkok over the weekend of July 11-12, 2026. U Tin Maung Swe held separate sessions with Thailand's Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow on Saturday and with additional regional diplomats on Sunday, South China Morning Post reported.
The talks addressed a renewed peace initiative and the welfare of former leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
Thailand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the Saturday meeting between the two foreign ministers. Myanmar's military staged a coup in 2021. ASEAN subsequently barred junta representatives from regional summits after the military ignored a five-point peace plan.
Thousands have been killed in the resulting nationwide civil conflict, according to South China Morning Post. Senior General Min Aung Hlaing later became president following an election. The meetings mark continued diplomatic engagement between Myanmar and ASEAN members despite the earlier restrictions.
