Myanmar’s military-installed leader Min Aung Hlaing meets China’s Xi Jinping in Beijing
The visit marks Min Aung Hlaing’s second state trip since his April election and follows an earlier visit to India. Myanmar seeks stronger trade ties with Beijing after years of diplomatic isolation.
The Japan TimesMyanmar’s President Min Aung Hlaing arrived in Beijing on Monday for scheduled talks with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, state media reported. The Southeast Asian nation is seeking stronger trade ties with China. The trip is Min Aung Hlaing’s second state visit since he took office as civilian president in April.
He previously traveled to India. Min Aung Hlaing was elected president on April 3 by the country’s rubber-stamp Parliament. A photograph from December 2025 shows him displaying an ink-stained finger after casting his vote in Naypyidaw.
Myanmar has been diplomatically isolated since a 2021 military coup ousted the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi. The current visit occurs against that backdrop of limited international engagement.
