The first note demanded millions of dollars for her return. The second note stated that Nancy Guthrie died shortly after the abduction, that the death was not intentional, and contained an apology to the family. Law enforcement asked outlets not to report the second note while they verified its authenticity and preserved details useful for questioning suspects.
Investigators have not located Nancy Guthrie despite a search involving local and federal agencies, volunteers, dogs, and drones. The FBI released surveillance footage of a masked individual near the property around the time of the disappearance. Savannah Guthrie, Nancy Guthrie’s daughter and a Today show host, addressed the note writer in a February 7 video.
“We received your message and we understand,” she said. “We beg you now to return our mother to us so that we can celebrate with her. ” On Tuesday, Savannah Guthrie returned to the air and appealed directly to viewers.
“Somebody knows something,” she said. “We are in agony. ” She added that the family would never stop searching. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department declined to comment on the note contents. The FBI did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
