BBC NewsNarges Mohammadi was transferred from a medical centre in Zanjan to Pars Hospital in Tehran after the Legal Medicine Organization determined that her multiple illnesses required continued treatment outside prison under the supervision of her own medical team.
The 54-year-old Nobel Peace Prize laureate had collapsed in prison more than a week earlier and lost consciousness twice on May 1, according to her Iran-based lawyer Mostafa Nili. She remains in intensive care in the hospital's coronary care unit.
The Legal Medicine Organization stated that Mohammadi needs to continue treatment outside prison, Nili said. Mohammadi had been jailed since December in Zanjan prison following her arrest in Mashhad. A prosecutor said she had made provocative remarks at a memorial ceremony for lawyer Khosrow Alikordi.
In early February, a Revolutionary Court sentenced her to an additional seven-and-a-half years in prison after convicting her of gathering and collusion and propaganda activities, her lawyer said.
She began serving a 13-year sentence in 2021 on charges of committing propaganda activity against the state and collusion against state security. Mohammadi was given a temporary release from Evin prison on medical grounds in December 2024. She has spent more than a decade of her life in prison and was awarded the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize while in prison.
Since being taken to the Zanjan hospital's cardiac care unit, her blood pressure has been swinging between extremely low and extremely high. She has been receiving oxygen and cannot talk, her brother Hamidreza Mohammadi told The Associated Press. Mohammadi had been severely beaten during her arrest and suffered a heart attack in March.
She has had a blood clot in her lung since before her imprisonment. She is believed to have lost about 20kg while in prison.
" Her brother Hamidreza Mohammadi said he was relieved she would now receive treatment from her own medical team but that the seriousness of her condition was not yet clear. He warned that any return to prison would cause severe problems for her. Her France-based lawyer Chirinne Ardakani said the suspension was secured through efforts by global civil groups and human rights diplomacy.
