NASA’s Webb Telescope Releases New Mid-Infrared Image of Messier 77 Galaxy

NASA’s Webb Space Telescope has released a new mid-infrared image of the spiral galaxy Messier 77. The image of the Messier 77 galaxy was released this week relative to May 8, 2026. The Messier 77 galaxy is located 45 million light-years away in the Cetus constellation.

A light year is about 6 trillion miles. The galaxy’s active nucleus is powered by a supermassive black hole that is 8 million times more massive than the sun. Surrounding gas is sucked into a tight orbit around the black hole, becoming so hot that it radiates in the extreme.

Webb’s mid-infrared instrument captured the stunning details of Messier 77. @ABC reported that the world’s largest and most powerful space telescope has been photographing the cosmos since launching in 2021.

Webb captured the scene as surrounding gas spirals inward, heating to extreme temperatures in the black hole’s grip. The telescope’s mid-infrared instrument revealed fine structures invisible to earlier observatories.

Its location in the Cetus constellation places it among the closer active galaxies visible from Earth. The supermassive black hole driving the galaxy’s brilliant core weighs in at 8 million solar masses.

Gas funneled into a tight orbit reaches temperatures high enough to emit across the electromagnetic spectrum with exceptional intensity.
