Khadijah Farrakhan, wife of Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan, died on Saturday at age 90, the organization announced. The Shura Executive Council issued a statement saying Louis Farrakhan informed members that his wife of 72 years had "returned to Allah." Mosque Maryam, the group's Chicago headquarters, described her as a devoted follower with a sweet heart.
Ross, she married Louis Walcott in Boston on Sept. 12, 1953. The couple had nine children. Two sons, Louis Farrakhan Jr. and Joshua Farrakhan, died in 2018 and 2023. She converted to Islam in 1955, the same year her husband joined the Nation of Islam.
The couple changed their names after joining. Louis Farrakhan assumed leadership after Malcolm X's 1965 assassination. Khadijah Farrakhan spoke at the 1997 Million Woman March in Philadelphia. She told attendees a nation rises no higher than its women and that families must rise together.
