National Assembly elects six-term lawmaker as new speaker
The National Assembly voted Friday to elect a six-term ruling party lawmaker as speaker for the second half of the 22nd term. Two four-term lawmakers were also chosen as vice speakers.
koreatimes.co.krThe National Assembly voted Friday to elect a six-term ruling party lawmaker as its new speaker. The lawmaker received 267 votes out of 276 cast during the plenary session and will serve until May 2028. The lawmaker had been selected as the party's candidate after securing a majority in an internal party vote last month.
In South Korea the largest party by seat count traditionally holds the speaker position.
Deputy speakers chosen The assembly also elected two four-term lawmakers as vice speakers. One is from the ruling party and one is from the main opposition party. The 300-member body currently has 161 seats held by the ruling party and 110 seats held by the main opposition party.
