National Weather Service Issues Heat Advisories for Parts of Northern Alaska

The National Weather Service in Fairbanks issued heat advisories for northern Alaska as temperatures are forecast to reach as high as 80 degrees Fahrenheit in the Arctic Plains and 85 degrees in the Yukon Flats early this week, Newsweek reported. m.

Monday through midnight Tuesday for Alaska's Western and Central Arctic Plains, including Umiat, Franklin Bluffs, Sagwon, and portions of the Dalton Highway.

Afternoon and evening temperatures could reach around 80 degrees in those areas. A separate Heat Advisory covers the Yukon Flats, including Fort Yukon, Circle, Beaver, Venetie, and Stevens Village, from 10 a.m. Tuesday through 11 p.m.

Wednesday. Temperatures there could reach 85 degrees between 1 p.m. and 10 p.m. NWS meteorologist Andrew Stokes stated that high temperatures such as these occur about once a year in the region and the current heat is unlikely to break any records.

Many homes in the area are designed to retain heat, and air conditioning is uncommon. The advisories are part of a warning system that began in April 2025 when the NWS Fairbanks and Juneau offices started issuing official Heat Advisories for the first time. Officials urged residents to drink water, check on vulnerable neighbors, and avoid strenuous activity during peak heat hours.

The heat event is linked to a strengthening ridge of high pressure over northern Alaska. Average summer highs in Umiat normally reach the upper 50s or low 60s, while winter highs average around -10 degrees and lows around -20 degrees.

A 2025 USGS report estimated that permafrost thaw combined with other factors could cause six to eight times as much land loss along the Arctic Coastal Plain by the end of the century as erosion alone, placing 40 to 65 percent of infrastructure in some coastal villages at risk without adaptation.
