NATO Chief Comments on US Troop Withdrawal from Germany
NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte stated that European leaders have received the message following the announcement of plans to withdraw 5,000 US soldiers from Germany. The move comes amid frustrations over NATO allies' support in an ongoing Middle East conflict. European officials emphasized the need to strengthen defense capabilities and increase spending.
U.S. Department of Defense / Wikimedia (Public domain)NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte said European leaders have “gotten the message” after the announcement of plans to withdraw 5,000 soldiers from Germany. The withdrawal was announced by the Pentagon on Friday. This follows comments from German Chancellor Friedrich Merz about Iran humiliating the US in negotiations to end the war.
Rutte made the remarks before a European Political Community meeting in Armenia on Monday. He noted disappointment from the US side regarding European reactions to events in the Middle East. Rutte added that Europeans are stepping up with a bigger role for Europe and a stronger NATO.
The EU’s top diplomat, Kaja Kallas, described the timing of the announcement as a surprise. She stressed the need to strengthen the European pillar in NATO and do more. Kaja Kallas highlighted that American troops in Europe protect both European and American interests.
Over the weekend, NATO spokesperson Allison Hart said officials in the 32-nation alliance are working with the US to understand the details of the force posture decision in Germany. European criticism of the war on Iran has increased recently, with impacts on the global economy due to disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz compared the conflict to past military situations in Iraq and Afghanistan, noting it is costing a great deal economically.
“It is, at the moment, a pretty tangled situation. And it is costing us a great deal of money. This conflict, this war against Iran, has a direct impact on our economic output.”
Spain has refused to allow attacks on Iran from its airspace or bases. The country's leader condemned the war as unjustified and a dangerous military intervention outside international law. In response, threats were made to end trade ties with Spain.
Rutte indicated that more European nations are pre-positioning assets like minehunters and minesweepers near the Gulf for potential next phases in the war. However, European nations have insisted they would not help police the Strait of Hormuz until the war ends.
Many European countries have committed to increasing defense spending amid concerns over commitment to NATO and Russia's actions in Ukraine. This push was underscored by leaders at the summit in Armenia. French President Emmanuel Macron stated that Europeans are taking their destiny into their own hands by increasing defense and security spending and building common solutions.
“We have to step up our military capabilities to be able to defend and protect ourselves.”
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen told reporters that Europe must enhance its military capabilities for self-defense and protection.
