Fines to LaMelo Ball
ESPN reported that the NBA fined Charlotte Hornets guard LaMelo Ball $35,000 for a flagrant foul on Miami Heat center Bam Adebayo, citing unnecessary and reckless contact.
The league also fined Ball an additional $25,000 for using profanity in a postgame on-court interview. These decisions came late Wednesday night following an investigation into the incident. The incident, later deemed a flagrant foul, involved Ball grabbing at Adebayo's ankle during a fall, resulting in a lower-back contusion that sidelined Adebayo for part of the game.
Adebayo was diagnosed with a lower-back contusion as a result of the fall. Per NBA rules, if the foul had been called as a Category 2 in real time, it would have resulted in Miami being awarded two free throws and possession of the ball, plus Ball's ejection.
Coaches and Players Respond
Heat Head coach Erik Spoelstra spoke on Thursday about the incident, stating, 'I didn't think that he needed to be penalized more moving forward. I don't think that would make sense.'
Spoelstra added, 'I don't think he's a dirty player.' He further said, 'It was a dirty play and a dangerous play that should have been caught at that moment.' Spoelstra said, though he added that Ball is not a dirty player and had no intent to injure.
A coach in Charlotte said, 'And we're glad that we still have him going on to the next game. I know he never has the intent to try to hurt anybody out there on the court.'
Game Context and Prior Incident
The Heat were eliminated from postseason contention with a 127-126 loss in Charlotte two days before Thursday.
Ball will play Friday for the Hornets in their play-in elimination game at Orlando. An NBA investigation is standard after such plays, and referee Zach Zarba told a pool reporter Tuesday night that the league would be looking into the play further. Per NBA rules, the Heat could not challenge the ruling on the play because no foul was called.
During a game at Miami in January 2024, Ball grabbed at Adebayo's leg as the Heat star was running to the other end of the court. In the January 2024 game, Adebayo stumbled but did not fall.
