A new national survey finds President Donald Trump’s approval rating at 42% among registered voters and Democrats holding a 5-point edge ahead of this year’s midterm elections.

That figure matches the lowest mark recorded for Trump among registered voters in NBC News surveys during his first term, reached in July 2020. Republican support for Trump has softened since March. In the new poll, 82% of Republicans approve of his job performance and 58% say they strongly approve, down from 88% approval and 63% strong approval three months earlier.
Two-thirds of independent voters disapprove of Trump. Among demographic groups that moved toward Trump in 2024, sentiment has turned negative. Sixty-four percent of Latino voters disapprove of Trump while 34% approve, and 77% of voters ages 18 to 29 disapprove compared with 21% who approve.
Voters express broad pessimism about the country’s trajectory. Fifty-six percent say America’s best years are behind it, while 40% say the best years are still ahead. Majorities of white, Black, and Latino voters share that view.
Almost 80% of voters say the American Dream is harder to attain now than a generation ago, 17% say it is about the same, and 5% say it is easier. Confidence in federal institutions is low. Half of voters say they have very little or no confidence in the federal government, and 58% say the same about Congress.
Eighteen percent express a great deal or quite a bit of confidence in the federal government, and 11% say the same about Congress. On the generic ballot, Democrats maintain advantages among several groups. Majorities of Black voters, Latino voters, voters under 50, and voters with a college degree prefer Democratic control of Congress.
Republicans hold edges among men, white voters, and those without a college education. Independents favor Democrats 46% to 34%. Ninety-five percent of voters who supported Kamala Harris in 2024 prefer Democratic control of Congress, while 90% of voters who supported Trump prefer Republican control.
The 5-point Democratic lead on the generic ballot is nearly unchanged from the 6-point margin recorded in the March NBC News poll. ” Horwitt said Democrats “are still in a really good position, despite redistricting, to win seats” and noted that the results do not need to match the scale of the 2018 midterm.
Democrats need a net gain of three House seats to take control of that chamber and a net gain of four Senate seats to secure a majority there.
