Nearly 200 Classrooms Destroyed in Magnitude 7.8 Mindanao Earthquake
The Department of Education reported nearly 200 classrooms destroyed and more than 1,000 others damaged after the June 8 earthquake. Officials allocated funds for temporary classrooms and repairs while suspending classes in over 8,000 schools.

m. on June 8, the Department of Education reported on June 9. The quake affected 267 public schools across 14 provinces in Soccsksargen, the Zamboanga Peninsula, Northern Mindanao, the Davao Region, and Caraga. Sultan Kudarat and South Cotabato recorded the highest numbers of impacted schools.
Of the damaged classrooms, 199 were destroyed, 296 sustained major damage, and 896 received minor damage. The Department of Education allocated P235 million to establish 130 temporary learning spaces equipped with emergency power and internet connectivity.
Additional funding includes P43.9 million for minor repairs and P7.7 million for cleanup operations. The agency also plans to draw from its P3-billion Quick Response Fund for longer-term reconstruction.
Classes were suspended in 8,208 schools on June 8. The Department of Education stated it will shift from full suspension protocols to reduced academic requirements using learning packets and home-based support. It added that face-to-face classes will resume only after engineers and structural experts inspect and clear facilities.
The agency also deployed guidance counselors to provide mental health support to affected students and staff.
