Netflix partnered with SignUp Media to provide American Sign Language interpretations for 73 family programming titles that cover hundreds of hours of content, Engadget reported. The titles include both original Netflix productions and licensed material. Featured series include Stranger Things: Tales From '85, Pokémon Horizons, Octonauts and The Magic School Bus Rides Again.
Movies in the selection feature Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio and Spider-Man: Homecoming. SignUp Media supplies the interpretations through a Google Chrome extension. Users install the plug-in, after which an interpreter appears in a separate window.
This method differs from the approach of other streaming services, which typically embed ASL directly into individual titles within their apps. Research has shown limitations in relying solely on captions for children. One study found that hearing-impaired children score lower than expected on literacy tests compared to peers of similar age.
SignUp Media previously supplied ASL interpretations for every best picture nominee at the 2026 Academy Awards through The Oscars Project.
