Minogue told ABC News' Lama Hasan in an interview that aired Tuesday on "Nightline" that she had previously declined repeated requests for such a project. "I've been asked many times to do my documentary. How do you tell the story?
Have I got enough of a story to tell? Why me? But it's just kind of going, 'OK, I'm saying yes,'" she said. Early reviews labeled Minogue "The Singing Budgie," a nickname that followed her first records and tours after she began as an Australian soap actress in the 1980s.
She said she responded by continuing to work. "Keep going," she said. "I'm kind of mystified myself as to how, but I'm open-minded to all sorts. I don't like to be boxed in. I kept chipping away at it.
Minogue has completed 19 headlining tours, a Las Vegas residency, and won two Grammys. K. charts across five consecutive decades. " She performed the song at that year's Brit Awards, emerging from a giant CD player on stage.
"I think I just learned the routine the day before," she said. "It was a shiny moment. It was a shining album. Everything was working. " An LGBTQ+ fan base formed around her early and remained steady alongside other demographics.
"The gay community were really onboard early, as were grandparents and parents and kids and aunties and girls," Minogue said. "My demographic is so inclusive, before that was a thing. And it stayed like that.
In 2005, at age 36 and mid-tour, Minogue received an early-stage breast cancer diagnosis. She missed her scheduled Glastonbury headlining slot that year. She returned to the festival in 2019 for one of its most-watched performances.
Family support helped during treatment. "I'm eternally grateful I have such a good family," she said. "Especially when I wasn't well, everyone just gathered around. " The docuseries also reveals a second cancer diagnosis in 2021 that Minogue had not previously disclosed.
She said she is now cancer-free and in remission. It was a shock," she said of the first diagnosis. "I don't know how I would have handled it differently if I wasn't due on stage in three days. " Minogue said the audience shares ownership of her story.
"It isn't solely for me, it's equally me and other people," she said. "I love hearing that the audience has some ownership, in the healthiest way, of this story. Because we've done it together. " She added that more music is planned to mark 40 years in the industry.
"There is more music. There's plenty to come. I feel like there always is. " She performed at The O2 Arena in London on May 26, 2025.
