Netflix Sci-Fi Series The Boroughs Centers on Retirement Community Residents

The Boroughs is an eight-episode science fiction series now streaming on Netflix. The story takes place in a retirement community in the New Mexico desert where residents discover an alien creature feeding on people while they sleep. The series follows Sam, played by Alfred Molina, who moves into the community after his wife dies.

He teams up with neighbors including Jack, played by Bill Pullman, retired journalist Judy and her husband Art, played by Alfre Woodard and Clarke Peters, former music manager Renee, played by Geena Davis, and doctor Wally, played by Denis O'Hare.

The show draws from 1980s science fiction films in which a group confronts an otherworldly threat. In this version the central characters are all in their 70s rather than children or teenagers. Residents notice small oddities such as complaints about owls in the walls before Sam captures the creature.

The mystery expands across the season and connects the alien to other unusual events in the community.

The series includes familiar plot elements such as improvised weapons and a mysterious peach tree. The older cast provides a different perspective on these events, and the characters' individual skills help them address the threat. The show runs eight episodes and is presented as a complete story.
