The Netherlands declared an official water shortage on Thursday and raised its national drought response to Level 2, Cnn reported. The Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management said persistent drought has reduced inflows from rain and rivers while demand continues to climb. Government bodies and water companies will now assess measures to cut water use.
Possible steps include lowering groundwater pumping and reducing the frequency of river lock operations to limit saltwater intrusion. The ministry stated that drinking water supplies will not be affected, though it urged residents to use water consciously.
Hannah Cloke, Regius professor of meteorology and climate science at the University of Reading, noted that the declaration came in mid-July, earlier than typical seasonal patterns.
The country has not reached Level 2 since August 2022 and has not entered Level 3 since 2003. A ministry spokesperson said continued high temperatures and low precipitation could lead to a more serious shortage. Low water levels have also affected shipping on the Rhine and Danube rivers elsewhere in Europe.
Cargo vessels on the Rhine have reduced loads, and the Danube reached its lowest point in 30 years in Romania over the weekend, Cnn reported.
