Neymar Says Brazil Career Finished After Norway Loss

Brazil's 2-1 loss to Norway in the round of 16 ended Neymar's international career, the 34-year-old forward said after the match. Neymar scored a stoppage-time penalty at MetLife Stadium but could not prevent Brazil's earliest World Cup exit since 1990. He left the field in tears and later told Globo that his time with the national team had finished where it began.

Norway took a 2-0 lead through two goals by Erling Haaland.

Neymar reduced the deficit from the penalty spot in the 90th minute, finishing with 80 international goals, three more than Pelé. The forward appeared in only two of Brazil's five matches because of a right calf injury. His 130 caps rank second on Brazil's all-time list behind Cafu.

Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti said the squad was saddened by the result but would use the defeat to begin a new cycle. He thanked the players for their effort and noted that the team did not deserve to lose. Ancelotti added that managing the disappointment is part of football and that the group must now look forward.

Neymar made his Brazil debut at the same stadium in 2010 and became the second Brazilian man, after Pelé, to score in four World Cups.
