NHS Leader States Hospitals Managing Doctors' Strike Effectively Amid Pay Dispute

Resident doctors in England, previously referred to as junior doctors, initiated their 15th strike on Wednesday as part of an ongoing pay dispute with the government. The British Medical Association, representing these doctors, organized the 48-hour walkout affecting hospitals across England. This dispute centers on demands for pay restoration following real-terms cuts since 2008.

NHS Chief Executive Amanda Pritchard stated that hospitals are managing the industrial action effectively up to this point. Emergency services remain operational, with non-urgent appointments rescheduled where necessary. The NHS had prepared by increasing staffing levels and postponing some elective procedures in advance.

The pay dispute has persisted for over a year, with resident doctors seeking a 35% pay increase to address inflation and past reductions. 8% for the current year and 6% for the next, which the union rejected as insufficient. Negotiations between the BMA and the Department of Health and Social Care have not yet resolved the issue.

This strike follows 14 previous actions since March 2023, marking the longest-running dispute in NHS history. Resident doctors, who make up nearly half of the medical workforce, provide essential care in hospitals. The action is set to end on Friday morning, after which services are expected to resume normal operations.

Affected parties include patients facing appointment disruptions and hospital staff covering additional shifts. The NHS estimates that previous strikes have cost around 230,000 appointments. Future impacts depend on whether further talks lead to a settlement, potentially averting additional walkouts planned by the union.
