NHS Reports Lower Bowel Cancer Screening Participation Among People in Their Fifties
Participation in England's bowel cancer screening programme fell to 65.2 per cent this year. Rates among 54-year-olds reached 56 per cent while those aged 74 returned nearly 74 per cent of kits. The programme detected an average of 100 cancers per week between April 2024 and March 2025.

GB News reported that the NHS has raised alarm over low participation rates in bowel cancer screening among people in their fifties. Fresh data showed 56 per cent of 54-year-olds returned their home testing kits compared with nearly 74 per cent of 74-year-olds. The health service distributes free faecal immunochemical tests to all individuals aged 50 to 74 every two years.
Overall participation dropped to 65.2 per cent this year from 67.6 per cent in the preceding twelve months. Between April 2024 and March 2025 the programme identified an average of 100 cancer cases per week. Approximately 5.2 million people participated and the NHS dispatched roughly 8.7 million kits annually.
He added that bowel cancer can develop without symptoms but catching it early saves lives. Joanne Vernon, 56, from Wigan received her kit two years ago and returned it within a fortnight despite having no symptoms. Doctors diagnosed early-stage bowel cancer and she underwent surgery in July 2024.
"I had no symptoms when I received my test. Not one," she said. Genevieve Edwards, chief executive of Bowel Cancer UK, said every completed kit offers an opportunity to detect bowel cancer early or prevent it.
Michelle Mitchell, chief executive of Cancer Research UK, noted that fewer people in their 50s are taking the quick at-home tests in England.
