Nicola Sturgeon Denies Knowledge as Former Husband Peter Murrell Jailed for Embezzling £400,000 from SNP
Former SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon addressed her estranged husband's embezzlement of £400,000 in party funds during a BBC interview. She denied knowledge of the wrongdoing and rejected personal responsibility.
news.sky.comNicola Sturgeon said she feels like she is serving a sentence for a crime she did not commit after Peter Murrell embezzled £400,000 of SNP party funds between 2010 and 2022. GB News reported the former SNP leader made the statement in a BBC interview. Sturgeon led the SNP as party leader between 2014 and 2023 and shared responsibility for managing the party's finances.
She denied any knowledge of Murrell's wrongdoing and said she is not responsible for crimes committed by her former husband. "I am not responsible for the crimes that my former husband committed and I'm not going to apologise for somebody else's crimes," Sturgeon said.
She added that she will take responsibility for the things she does and the decisions she makes, and that she is answering questions because she believes strongly in accountability.
When asked if she bore any responsibility due to her role, Sturgeon said: "No, he perpetrated a crime on the SNP. By definition, that included me as the party leader. He misled. " She continued: "He is serving and will be serving a sentence for a crime he committed.
Sturgeon also addressed the largest transaction Murrell made, a motorhome costing £124,550 that he kept at his mother's house. She said she had no conscious memory of seeing the motorhome, noting it was round the sides of the house and not immediately visible. Sturgeon became visibly emotional when speaking about a necklace gifted to her by Murrell that cost more than £400.
She described admiring a pendant at Shetland jewellers during a campaign visit, after which Murrell later gave it to her as a surprise. "The idea that I would have gone about wearing things that I had known were anything other than what they were presented as, a gift from my husband...
to then find out that these were gifts given to me that he'd bought with the party's money causes a level of, I don't know, pain, bewilderment," she said.
Sturgeon said she aimed to be careful of stepping on the toes of the police investigation into SNP finances. She stated she is not sure she will ever properly come to terms with the situation.
