Nigeria's State Security Service to Appeal Life Sentences for Two Ansaru Commanders

Nigeria's State Security Service announced it will appeal life sentences given to two senior Ansaru commanders, stating that only the death penalty matches the severity of their crimes. The two men, identified as Mahmud Usman and Abubakar Abba, were arrested during a multi-agency operation between May and July 2025.
National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu announced the arrests in August 2025 and described Usman as the overall coordinator of Ansaru sleeper cells and Abba as his deputy.
Prosecutors filed 32-count terrorism charges against the pair in 2025. Both initially entered mixed pleas before reversing course and pleading guilty, resulting in life imprisonment rather than a full trial. A senior State Security Service official told the News Agency of Nigeria that the commanders had considered pleading guilty earlier but changed their minds after Ansaru members abducted pupils and teachers in Oriire LGA, Oyo State.
The abductors demanded the commanders' release in exchange for the captives. The official said the two Oriire teachers were later beheaded and that life sentences would not deliver justice for those killings.
The planned appeal will reopen legal proceedings in one of Nigeria's high-profile terrorism cases. The State Security Service maintains that the maximum penalty available under Nigerian law should apply given the scale of the alleged offenses.
