Until now, companies hiring gig-economy and zero-hours staff in the delivery sector have not been legally required to verify right-to-work status. The Government has pledged to extend these checks and will publish its response to the consultation later this month.
Fines of up to £60,000 per worker, director disqualifications and prison sentences of up to five years are proposed for companies that fail to comply.

Illegal-working enforcement activity has risen 83 per cent in arrests and 77 per cent in raids compared with the previous period.
