NJ Transit Considers $100 World Cup Fares to MetLife Stadium
NJ Transit is considering a significant price increase for transportation to World Cup matches at MetLife Stadium, prompting criticism from local officials. Mikie Sherrill and Chuck Schumer have called on FIFA to cover transportation costs, highlighting the financial burden on commuters.
nypost.comNJ Transit plans to raise ticket prices to $100 for fans traveling from New York Penn Station to MetLife Stadium for the eight FIFA World Cup games hosted there. The average ticket goes for $12.90, marking a 775% increase. A New Jersey governor criticized the inherited World Cup host agreement, which absolves FIFA of any responsibility for transportation costs.
The governor stated that the agreement provides zero dollars from FIFA for transportation to and from the World Cup. The governor surmised that the situation will result in a $48 million bill for NJ Transit as they are tasked with carting upwards of 40,000 fans to and from the stadium.
4% of their entire revenue.
New York Sen. Chuck Schumer also criticized FIFA for shifting the transportation costs to the public, stating, "The least FIFA can do is ensure New York residents can go to the stadium without being gouged at the turnstile. I am demanding FIFA step up and cover transportation costs for host cities and states.
" A NJ Transit spokesperson indicated that the rumored price hike has not been finalized.
Additionally, New Jersey-bound commuters will be barred from the NJ Transit portion of Penn Station during select times on game days, with six out of eight shutout hours occurring during rush hour. No MTA train or bus travels to MetLife Stadium, and parking passes on the stadium grounds are priced at $225 each.
The American Dream entertainment complex has partnered with FIFA to sell a limited amount of general parking in its section of the MetLife lot.
In early March, the Trump administration announced that it would funnel $100.3 million to enhance public transportation in World Cup host cities ahead of the event, supporting planning, capital, and operating expenses for World Cup matches and related events.
