Nobel Laureate Narges Mohammadi Transferred from Zanjan Prison to Tehran Hospital
Iranian activist Narges Mohammadi, 54, was moved by ambulance to Tehran Pars Hospital after suffering a heart attack and losing consciousness twice in Zanjan prison. She has been granted a suspension of a new 7.5-year sentence on bail but her foundation says the measure is insufficient and she requires permanent specialized care to avoid returning to face 18 remaining years in prison.
The GuardianNarges Mohammadi has been transferred by ambulance to Tehran Pars Hospital in the Iranian capital, where she is now receiving treatment from her own medical team. The move from Zanjan prison, where the 54-year-old Nobel Peace Prize winner had been held since December, followed days of pleading by her family and others after she lost consciousness twice.
Mohammadi suffered a heart attack two weeks ago.
She was first transferred to a local hospital on May 1 before the later move to Tehran, according to the Narges Mohammadi Foundation. The foundation said she was granted a prison sentence suspension on bail. It added, however, that the suspended sentence is not enough and that Mohammadi needs permanent, specialized care.
"We must ensure she never returns to prison to face the 18 years remaining on her sentence," the foundation said in a statement. 5 years. She was arrested in December after denouncing the death of lawyer Khosrow Alikordi.
A prosecutor said Mohammadi made provocative remarks at Khosrow Alikordi's memorial ceremony. U.S. and Israel launched their war against Iran.
The foundation's statement, shared with The Associated Press, underscored that the activist requires ongoing specialized medical attention. Her campaign that earned the Nobel focused on advancing women's rights and abolishing the death penalty. Iran shut down most of the internet in the country in January as authorities suppressed mass protests triggered by economic unease.
Rights groups have reported ongoing executions of people involved in the unrest.
