Non-government organizations conducted undercover operations against American fascists decades before the Southern Poverty Law Center began similar work. Steven J. Ross describes these efforts in his book The Secret War Against Hate: American Resistance to Antisemitism and White Supremacy, published by Bloomsbury.

Trujillo joined the Non-Sectarian Anti-Nazi League in New York under the name Mana Truhill. He attended gatherings of the American Renaissance Party founded by James Madole. Trujillo was born in 1930 in New Brunswick, New Jersey. U.S. Army paratrooper.

Trujillo shared secret reports with the Non-Sectarian Anti-Nazi League while attending American Renaissance Party events. A photograph in Ross's book shows Trujillo in a make-believe SS-style uniform with a swastika armband. Madole founded the American Renaissance Party, which advocated for a United States inhabited by whites only. Trujillo's reports documented activities of the group.
