Germany-based wind turbine manufacturer Nordex called for the European Union to apply a western-origin requirement to every new wind installation that connects to European grids. Nordex chief executive officer José Luis Blanco told the Financial Times that the rule should cover all projects, not only those receiving public support.

Since the 2022 energy crisis, European governments have tracked Chinese dominance in wind-turbine and blade production, solar panels, batteries, and electric vehicles. The same period has seen Europe increase renewable capacity to reduce reliance on imported oil and gas. Nordex’s request would expand an existing principle that currently applies only to publicly funded projects.
