North Carolina Brewery Rebrands After Co-Founder Arrested on Child Rape Charges
A Charlotte brewery changed its name and ownership after one of its founders was arrested on charges including statutory rape of a 13-year-old girl. The business reopened under new management weeks after the arrest.
nypost.comA North Carolina brewery changed its name and ownership after one of its founders was arrested on charges including statutory rape of a 13-year-old girl. Police said the 44-year-old man was arrested December 10 after officers found him naked in his car outside the girl's Charlotte home.
Court documents alleged he had groomed the girl through Snapchat and text messages for two weeks before breaking into her family's home.
The girl's parents called 911 after discovering the man in her bedroom, authorities said. He faces felony charges including statutory rape of a child, first-degree burglary, and indecent liberties with a child. He remains in custody on an $11 million bond and is scheduled to appear in court next month.
The man's wife filed for divorce and issued a statement distancing herself from the allegations. The company said the man had been removed from ownership and that she was now solely in charge. Major retailers including Publix and Lowe's Foods removed the brewery's products from their shelves.
The taproom closed briefly in March before reopening under a new name and owner. The company is now owned by a former staff member. The rebrand and ownership change were described as an effort to provide a fresh start following the criminal case.
