North Tyneside Council Advances Tynemouth Library Demolition After Six-Year Delay
Conditions required before demolition have been completed. The council closed the library in February 2020 and later approved plans for a replacement building that includes a library, community facility, and six flats.
bbc.co.ukSeveral conditions needed before demolition of Tynemouth Library have now been completed, North Tyneside Council confirmed. The library closed in February 2020 as part of the Ambition for North Tyneside project. Plans call for the existing building to be replaced by a new structure containing a library, a community facility with a Newcastle Building Society branch, and six flats.
Planning permission has been secured.
The council has also approved an archaeological survey to be conducted during demolition rather than beforehand. Cabinet member for neighbourhoods Hannah Johnson said the council is working with the developer to maintain momentum.
Bartoli welcomed the progress but noted residents will be frustrated by the length of time taken. He described the closed building as a derelict eyesore in the heart of Tynemouth and said residents deserve better than years of delay and excuses. The council stated it hopes further updates will show real progress within the coming year.
