bbc.co.ukNorthampton Saints defeated Exeter Chiefs in the Premiership Rugby final at Twickenham on Saturday. Campbell Ridl, a 21-year-old winger, scored a try in the first half and made a try-saving tackle during the match. Ridl finished the season with 17 tries in all competitions for Exeter.
Rob Baxter, Exeter Chiefs boss, said Ridl must improve before pre-season begins. "The single biggest thing that Campbell can do is turn up on day one of pre-season better than he is now," Baxter told BBC Sport after the loss. Baxter warned that without continued progress, Ridl risks becoming a one-season player.
"Because if he doesn't, it doesn't matter what this season's been about, this season just falls apart and it means you become a one-shot wonder," he said. Ridl, who is London-born and grew up in South Africa, graduated from Exeter University's tie-up with Exeter Chiefs. He is also an England Under-20 player.
Baxter said he plans to call Ridl within 48 hours of the final. "He'll be one of those guys I'll give a phone call to in 48 hours and just go, 'Right, now's your time, that's your dipping your toe into it, you know what Premiership Rugby's about now, you know what a final's about, you know what a semi-final's about, you know we can get better,'" Baxter said.
Baxter added that Ridl and other younger players will be important to Exeter next season.
